Outline for persuasive essay

Intorduction/Thesis: Parenting is an issue where there is no real right or wrong way to do things. A person’s social and cultural background will largely shape their approach to parenting. Many cultures believe in staunch discipline and harsh physical consequences; many others believe in the opposite, only giving attention to the positives and bolstering a child’s sense of self. The most recent evidence supports a middle ground: Parents affirming children’s strong suits while still maintaining healthy limit setting. Finding a middle ground and moderation for both ends of the spectrum is where children seem to flourish the most.

1.    Love and Logic
A. Principles of love and logic
B. Support for why this is the preferred method for some parents

2.    Spare the rod spoil the child
A. Principles of firm discipline and harsh punishment
B. Support for why this is the preferred method for some parents

3.    Positive reinforcement and limit setting
A. Principles of evidence based programs like “The incredible years”
B. Support for how this is the superior method of parenting

4.    Conclusion: Parenting is an issue that is divisive and complicated, but when a person follows a system that is in alignment with their personal beliefs and what is in the best interest of the child they can never truly do wrong. Children need love, limit setting and support in order to grow and flourish.

  1. While your outline is simple and to the point, I don't see this as much of an argument rather than an informative/explanatory piece. You need to ensure that you show both sides of the argument and counter-argue both, but also, persuade your reader! Get them to take a side with you, based on your proposed claim. Make this clear as you work ont he first draft.
