Outline for persuasive essay

Intorduction/Thesis: Parenting is an issue where there is no real right or wrong way to do things. A person’s social and cultural background will largely shape their approach to parenting. Many cultures believe in staunch discipline and harsh physical consequences; many others believe in the opposite, only giving attention to the positives and bolstering a child’s sense of self. The most recent evidence supports a middle ground: Parents affirming children’s strong suits while still maintaining healthy limit setting. Finding a middle ground and moderation for both ends of the spectrum is where children seem to flourish the most.

1.    Love and Logic
A. Principles of love and logic
B. Support for why this is the preferred method for some parents

2.    Spare the rod spoil the child
A. Principles of firm discipline and harsh punishment
B. Support for why this is the preferred method for some parents

3.    Positive reinforcement and limit setting
A. Principles of evidence based programs like “The incredible years”
B. Support for how this is the superior method of parenting

4.    Conclusion: Parenting is an issue that is divisive and complicated, but when a person follows a system that is in alignment with their personal beliefs and what is in the best interest of the child they can never truly do wrong. Children need love, limit setting and support in order to grow and flourish.

Compare/Contrast Northwest Coast Natives/ Great Plains Natives

Northwest Coast Tribes:
Affluent subsistence lifestyles.

Food sources: Predominantly fish and small to mid-sized game

Minimal need for agriculture as surrounding area was so fecund.
Potlatch ceremonies pivotal to social infrastructure. Generosity revered above almost all else.

Heavily wooded areas created large opportunities for shelter and high quality water vessels.

Semi-nomadic, mostly for social development and food gathering.

Large communal homes: IE longhouses

Great Plains Natives:
Semi-nomadic lifestyles pre-colonization
Largely nomadic after colonization, travel area expanded greatly with the re-introduction of horses.

Social structure based around warring, counting coup and feats of bravery.

Food sources: Large game, small agriculture, and gathering.

Flat grasslands created a precedent for feuds over productive land areas.

Single family homes: IE Teepees and Wigwams.

Both:

High levels of reverence for elders, children and healers.

Survival of culture treated with high regard.

Barter was necessary for success.

Similar structures for spiritual belief systems: a monotheistic higher power and elevated stations for animals.

Creation stories etc were similar but incorporated the land/animals surrounding the tribes.

Have culturally specific regalia.
